A Glimpse into Albuquerque's Rich History

Albuquerque's roots trace back over 12,000 years, beginning with Paleo-Indian hunter-gatherers. By 750 CE, the region saw the development of multi-story adobe dwellings by the Pueblo peoples. The area was later inhabited by the Tiwa people around 1250.

In 1706, Spanish Governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdés officially founded the city as La Villa de Alburquerque, naming it in honor of the Duke of Alburquerque. The settlement was strategically positioned along the Camino Real, serving as a vital trading and military outpost.

Over the centuries, Albuquerque evolved significantly:

  • 1821: Transitioned to Mexican control following Mexico's independence from Spain.
  • 1846: Came under U.S. governance during the Mexican-American War.
  • 1880: Arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway spurred rapid growth, leading to the development of "New Town" east of the original plaza.
  • 1891: Incorporated as a city, marking a new era of urban development.

Today, Albuquerque stands as a testament to a rich blend of Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and American influences, all contributing to its unique cultural landscape.

GAAR History

In 2021, GAAR produced a video series to celebrate the role that GAAR REALTORS® played in the development of the community and the local real estate market. The project was a large undertaking with Historian William A. Dodge who became ill during the process and eventually passed away in December 2023. GAAR will be forever grateful for his unwavering dedication to the project even while he was struggling with his health. Below is a link to his chapters, videos, and other ways the Association celebrated their 100th Anniversary.
