APD sees no uptick in robberies despite 2 holdups in shopping center parking lots

Two armed robberies at busy shopping centers last week raised questions for the Albuquerque Police Department about whether there has been a rise in that type of crime.

But police spokesman Tanner Tixier said officers have not seen an unusual uptick or trend in robberies in the past week, or even in the past month.

Two women recently reported to police that they’d been robbed at gunpoint in shopping center parking lots across town from each other – one in the Uptown parking lot Wednesday and one in the Cottonwood Mall parking lot Thursday.

A recent news report said retail parking lot robberies “seem” to have spiked.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier said the department has responded to an average of nine robbery incidents per week this year. There were eight robberies last week – about average – and September is on track to have fewer reported robberies than last month, he said.

“Robberies aren’t up, so it was just a catchy headline is all,” he said.
