With its gorgeous landscapes, it's no surprise photographers flock to New Mexico. But there might be another reason that attracts photographers to the state.
Zippia, a career site, ranked New Mexico as the third best state for photographers.
According to the site, the average salary of a photographer in the Land of Enchantment is $40,160. Experienced photographers earn an average $72,800 annually while entry-level photographers can earn $20,410. New Mexico has a total of 290 photographer jobs, the site said.
To compile its ranking, Zippia looked at data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, then compared the salary data relative to the cost of living in each state.
Rhode Island was ranked No. 1, followed by Massachusetts. Louisiana was ranked last.
The arts is a $5.6 billion industry in New Mexico. But a Business First report last year found that while New Mexico’s employment in creative industries is 3 percent greater than the national share and is strong in cultural goods production and distribution, it’s falling behind in applied intellectual property fields such as publishing, media, architecture, design and advertising — where wages are higher and job growth is faster.
