As people start making their vacation plans for 2017, Visit Albuquerque wants to make sure the Duke City is on their radar.
Visit Albuquerque is taking part of National Plan for Vacation Day, Jan. 31, hoping tourists book vacations here and residents to consider staycations.
Via Facebook and Instagram Visit ABQ encouraged tourists Tuesday to #PlanForVacation as a part of a national marketing effort called " Project Time Off," a U.S. Travel Association promotion to encourage workers to take more vacation days, citing the mental health benefits that come with recharging.
Visit ABQ's specific suggestions for taking a break in the Duke City include non-fiesta-related balloon rides, indulging in the city's famous red or green chile, donning your best heels and giving them a spin at the National Institute of Flamenco, or just finding a way to enjoy New Mexico's 310+ days of sunshine every year.
According to a 2016 survey by Bankrate, 52 percent of Americans who get vacation days said they planned to leave some of those vacation days unused.
Tourism is a growing industry for the Land of Enchantment.
About 34 million people visited New Mexico in 2015, according to a report released by the New Mexico Tourism Department. Direct visitor spending in New Mexico has grown six years in a row, hitting $6.3 billion in 2015, a 3.6 percent increase compared to 2014. And those visitors have a big impact on jobs and taxes. The study said one in 12 jobs in New Mexico is sustained by visitor spending, and tourism generated $629 million in state and local taxes in 2015.
