Improving the local education system is a high priority, both as citizens and REALTORS®. Not only are good schools a top requirement for most homebuyers, they are a top requirement for attracting businesses and jobs to our community.
There are currently two important bond issues on the ballot this election cycle.
Early voting is already underway in the bond election for $575,000,000 in capital improvement bonds for the Albuquerque Public Schools and associated Charter Schools, and for the Central New Mexico Community College. The APS school districts span the entire county of Bernalillo, as well as the Village of Corrales. The CNM districts span across both Bernalillo and Sandoval (City of Rio Rancho) counties. Any registered voter in these districts is eligible to vote in the election.
APS is seeking their approval of $575 million for a wide variety of capital improvement projects. The funding would come in the form of a $375 million mill levy and $200 million in general obligation bonds that will NOT increase taxes! Click here to learn more about this bond.
CNM is asking for an $84,000,000 general obligation bond to make improvements to all campuses with upgrades in technology for the 21st century.
Since the capital mill levy was introduced in 1996, CNM has not asked for a tax increase. But now, CNM is asking to increase its tax rate to allow for critically important renovations and improvements to the College's learning environments. This increased bonding capacity will raise the College's capital mill levy from .55 to 1.0 mil. The impact of the increase would be approximately $29.10 per year on a house with a market value of $200,000 (the approximate average home price in the region). You can vote early through Saturday, January 30th at one of the five early voting locations throughout the community.
For election day on February 2nd, additional polling locations have been added for your convenience.
Make you voice heard on these important education issues. Please take the time to vote on these bonds.
