American City Business Journals compiled information about wealth for more than 15,000 cities, villages, towns, boroughs and communities across the U.S. based on data that included the five-year version of the U.S. Census Bureau's 2013 American Community Survey.
Wealth is not determined by income alone, so ACBJ came up with a 12-part formula using additional factors such as per capita income, number of adults with a bachelors degree and median house value. Using these factors and more, it was determined that the most affluent people live in Northern New Mexico.
Meanwhile, the zip code with the highest affluence score is 87122, which is the Northeast Heights area of Albuquerque. Residents there had an affluence score of 228.446. Browse the interactive map to see what score your zip code received.
The highest median household income is in Los Alamos with $107,552, and 28.9 percent of workers in Los Alamos earn $100,000 or more. Los Alamos ranked 652nd for median income nationally.
